Fishing The Blue Mesa Reservoir

We Offer Professional Guided Fishing Trips Call Our Marina For More Details 970-641-0707

It is no surprise that fishing is one of the main attractions of Blue Mesa Reservoir. It is the largest lake in Colorado and supports many species of fish, including Kokanee Salmon, Lake Trout and Rainbow Trout. The reservoir is one of the most productive fisheries in Colorado.

While the reservoir supports many species of fish, Kokanee Salmon is the main priority of the Game and Fish department. The reservoir is also a prime habitat for lake trout which grow to enormous size. These huge fish are a big attraction to fisherman but they also threaten the species balance of the lake. Lake trout are predator fish and since their introduction to the lake they have thrived taking a devastating toll on the Kokanee salmon. Blue Mesa is not a natural reservoir and the species did not evolve together. This presents a constant challenge to the Game and Fish of balancing the large trophy fish against the habitat of the salmon.

Fishing Morrow Point -The Black Canyon of the Gunnison

Elk Creek Marina, LLC Guided Fishing is the exclusive guided fishing outfitter for Morrow Point-The Black Canyon of the Gunnison. This is as close to fishing a private reservoir as you can get while still on public waters. The canyon and the fishing are spectacular! Call Elk Marina for more details:

Morrow Point Reservoir is formed by the 468 foot Morrow Point Dam. This was the first concrete double arch dam built in the country. The reservoir is spectacular! A narrow, deep lake flanked with steep canyon walls. The irony of this beautiful lake is that it is so hard to see let alone fish. Access is difficult. The Mesa Creek Trail, located just below Blue Mesa Dam, provides access to the lake.

The only boats that are allowed on the reservoir are non-motorized boats which can be carried down the Mesa Creek trail. This means mostly kayaks and small inflatable boats that can be carried down the 232 steep steps to the lake. And of course carried back up! The payoff is worth it for the adventurous. Once there it is almost like having your private, spectacular lake. Trophy Rainbow Trout, Brown Trout, Kokanee Salmon, and Lake Trout can all be caught here.

For those that do not want to transport their own boat down to the reservoir, we offer guided fishing tours.
